The transition into kindergarten is a big milestone—for children and families alike. To help make that transition smoother and set students up for success, Kindergarten Countdown Camp, a program of United Way in Montgomery County, provides a welcoming, supportive start for children preparing to enter school.

Kindergarten Camp is designed to help incoming kindergarteners build confidence, develop early learning skills, and become comfortable with the routines of a classroom setting. For many children, this program offers their first classroom learning experience. Through hands-on activities, guided play, storytelling, and social interaction, students begin developing the skills they need to thrive academically and emotionally.

Beyond letters and numbers, Kindergarten Camp focuses on the entire school experience. Kids learn how to follow routines, take turns, listen to teachers, and interact positively with peers—skills that are just as critical as academic readiness.  Beyond the classroom kiddos get to experience riding the bus, going through the lunch line and recess.  Practicing these skills early, children enter kindergarten feeling confident, capable, and excited to learn.

Families benefit, too. Kindergarten Camp provides parents and caregivers peace of mind, knowing their child is gaining a strong foundation before the school year begins. For working families or those navigating educational systems for the first time, the program helps ease anxieties and builds a bridge between home and school.
Kindergarten Camp reflects the United Way in Montgomery County’s commitment to early childhood success and long-term community impact. Research shows that children who start school ready to learn are more likely to read at grade level, graduate high school, and succeed later in life. By investing in early education, the United Way is helping ensure that every child—regardless of background—has the opportunity to reach their full potential and thrive!

Because when children start strong, our entire community grows stronger.
