From the moment a child opens their first book, a world of possibility begins. Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library was created with that powerful belief at its heart—that every child, no matter their background, deserves access to books and the joy of reading.

Here in our community, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is proudly offered as a program of United Way in Montgomery County, with over 1,000 local children currently enrolled and receiving a brand-new, age-appropriate book mailed directly to their home every month from birth until their fifth birthday.

This program is NOT based on NEED…or money in any way.  EVERY child deserves books, opportunities and the experience. Because it’s more than just HAVING books on the shelf, it’s about the way a toddler feels when they first learn to run — running to the mailbox, so excited to get THEIR book.  It’s about driving moms and dads crazy until they read their latest adventure for the fifth time that night. It’s about remembering that feeling about a book when a middle school book report comes due — remembering the magic of a story and the JOY that showed up month after month in their mailbox.

That early excitement becomes confidence. That confidence becomes learning. And that learning becomes opportunity.

Research shows children who grow up with books in the home are more prepared for kindergarten, develop stronger language skills, and are more likely to succeed academically. But just as important is the emotional connection — the comfort of a bedtime story, the pride of having their own library, and the memories families create together.

Through the leadership and support of United Way in Montgomery County, this program continues to grow, ensuring more children start school ready to learn and ready to succeed.
